Past Scrapbook Projects

From my original scrapbook.
I thought I'd do a little "Show & Tell" and let you actually see a tiny bit of past scrapbook journals.  I began it all, like so many people, with photo album scrapbooking when my kids were younger.

Then I progressed to a scrapbook, then a scrapbook journal, and now more of a combination of everything with a leaning towards scrapbook art.

A few photo album scrapbooking views
A family trip into Chicago during Stephanie's senior year of college.  It was over Spring Break but if was freezing!
Feast of the Hunter's Moon page
Another Feast of the Hunter's Moon page on a different year.  Steph is in the upper right photo, Christopher to the lower left, Hubby and I to the lower right.
Even then, I included favorite poetry.

A few views of my first scrapbook

The above is the very simple way of viewing and organizing favorite magazine images, as well as clipped out prose and poetry.  Many of the images used originally were from the old Victoria magazine.

It was done in an actual large Scrapbook instead of the artist's sketch books I used later.

A few views of my first scrapbook journal

I guess I didn't take as many photos of this book as I thought but it gives you a good idea of how it was used.

I go back and view all of them quite often, especially in the cold and dark Winter months!

The garden meets the Scrapbook Journal

I wrote down what I remembered about the 2010 garden before starting the 2011 information.
Last year I wished I'd kept a detailed garden diary so this Spring I started a section in my Scrapbook Journal.

If I had a bigger garden, I'd create a journal just for it but this works great.

I don't know why I didn't think of this last year, it is so easy to write it all down.

The date in parenthesis is the harvest date according to instructions.

I had to make a page for raised bed #5 when hubby built it.

I have left a couple extra pages blank to write out what worked, what did not, when items were harvested, etc.

So far it is working nicely and is so simple to use... I love simple.

In case you have never seen other pages from my Scrapbook Journal... below are a few pages to give you an idea of how I use it...

I use it to write recipes... in this case, I made lists and wrote out recipes I used for our graduation open house.  Wow, that seems like only yesterday!

My main stock up list gets added to in the Journal.

I use my Journal to write favorite quotes and Bible verses, too.

There was nearly a year when I didn't write much at all but a couple months ago I dusted it off... all a part of my year to Create!

Of course, it all got started a few years ago when my precious friend, Jewels, showed her Scrapbook Journal and I was smitten.

A link to hers can be found... here.

Scrapbook Journal - How to

I had so many people ask about the Scrapbook Journal that I thought you would like me to re-run the post I wrote about creating your own journal.  Here 'tis...

My Scrapbook Journal

I'd promised a friend of mine that I would show her how I created my scrapbook journal. So... since I'm already doing the work... I thought I'd make it a blog project. :)

I've seen so many ways people put together their journals and each is individual. I know Cheryl doesn't cut out her pictures ahead of time and file them like I do. Kimberly has two journals, one that is portable! It has to be personal so it can fit within each person's schedule.

So, I've included links to a few other blogs to show how they put theirs together (including Jewels' original link since she is now back)! They will be at the very end of the post.

Another page from my original scrapbook

I actually have two journals, the first being this one I showed awhile back. I've kept it for years and it is all favorite pictures, poetry, etc. I have everything in it, from beautiful still life photos to favorite rooms. It is an actual scrapbook, purchased many years ago at a fabric store.

I still add to it, especially the larger magazine pages that do not stand up well to being cut. My original post about it will show up when you click on my Scrapbook Journals below.

First, I find beautiful pictures and prose from gorgeous magazines. Here are a few I like to use. I spent many a Winter evening propped on my bed and cutting out pictures last year. I'm not much of a hoarder but I do tend to hang on to magazines that I love (they are stored in vintage suitcases in my family room).

So... I had lots to choose from. I cut mine out ahead of time since I tend to get fatigued very easily. It's a good downtime project. Then, when I have the energy and desire to get creative and write in my journal, everything is ready.

I keep everything I need together... scissors, little X-acto knife, adhesives, etc. They're in the vintage baking dish. Yes, I do tend to get the color red in just about every project.

The pictures all get filed in the file folders where they most belong (some could be filed under more than one but I choose where I'll probably use it most). The file folders are the kind that have their sides sealed. I think they're called pocket folders at the bookstore.

Some of the file headings are: Spring/Easter, Summer/4th of July, Autumn/Thanksgiving, Winter/Christmas, Vintage looking decorating, Flowers and Gardens, Vintage Kitchens and Dishes, Tea Time and China, Words and Prose... there are more but they slip my mind right now.

I keep the files all together in a wicker basket. My scrapbook journal, which is a spiral artist's sketchbook that I've covered with contact paper, is often with my Bible. The vintage baking pan stays in my closet or next to the chair where I'm working.

I glue or tape (double stick) pictures in for about the next ten pages or so, ready to go when I am. Most often when I get some free time in the morning...

Here is an example of a page already finished. I put everything in mine from prayer requests, to seasonal "To Do" lists, to books I want to read or that I am reading, recipes, letters to be sent... anything that can be written down. I used it a lot when planning the graduation open house and what to pack for our vacation.

Bottles and journals

Kitchen window circa 2007 or 2008

I must take the time to look through Comments and answer some questions. These two were easy to remember so I'll answer them now.

I had lots of comments about the flowers on my kitchen windowsill that I posted a few days ago. This picture above shows a slightly different view with taller flowers and a milk bottle in the middle. They were originally a bouquet purchased at the farmer's market.

This photo was taken last week when I "snipped" a few zinnias off flowers on my deck.

I originally got this idea from a picture in a magazine that I keep in my original scrapbook journal. The only difference... their bottles were lining a larger window and the glass bottles were all that beautiful deep blue (the same as one of the famous brands of water has for their bottle).

This color works better for me. I've been able to find a lot of various sizes at thrift stores, Goodwill, and garage sales. I love the look that either one flower or many flowers in each bottle provides.

I also will place only one flower in the middle bottle... or a tiny bunch of my favorite Lily of the Valley flowers in early spring.

A look at my original scrapbook journal, which is mostly pictures, poetry, prose...

A page from my "newer" scrapbook journal which is actually used as a journal.

That brings me to the scrapbook journal posts, which a reader asked about. I will take some recent pictures of my journal soon but if you click... here... it will take you to the past journal posts.

They include links to some journal posts in other blogs using a similar scrapbooking approach.

Grocery ponderings and scenes from my scrapbook journal

It's a busy day today! I drove Christopher to his class this morning since I wanted to stop by the Super Target near the college (even though it meant I just had to peruse cooking and decorating books in the library for an hour as I waited on him... how difficult!). :) His CAD class lasts for three hours (or more).

Thankfully, most of the organic products at Target have not gone up much (butter, eggs, and organic Smucker's preserves are the three I purchase the most). They continue to be very close to the price range of non-organics. Otherwise, I just can't afford them and from what I've been reading online, other families are quickly getting to that point, too. I also bought half-half cream and organic lemons that were marked down for quick clearance since they were near their "use by" dates. I made certain at the cash register that they showed up on clearance (having learned long ago that computers sometimes have not been informed of price drops).

I can't stock up much at all this month. I bought six cans of tuna since they had the tuna packed in oil on a huge sale. I read a recommendation recently by a guy who is a tuna fishermen. He said the prices in the store will probably be going up a great deal as the cost of fishing is skyrocketing. He said if we can buy tuna for 65 cents a can... stock up. (That's about how much this was.)

I'm with Julia (Child), the tuna packed in water doesn't have much of a taste if you are using it in a recipe. If the circumstances were different this month, I'd purchase fifteen cans since most of the time they are on sale it is for the water packed tuna. We take life as it comes. :) I also purchased three family size cans of Campbell's veggie beef soup for the pantry. It was on a big discount, too. I prefer making soup from scratch but it is always good to have a back up.

That's about it for stock up this month but I was able to do more than usual the past two months. We'll be using some of our pantry items this month but I'll notice carefully what we use so we can replace it.

I'll continue with
Recession Proofing and Stocking Up posts but I'm slipping in these scenes from my scrapbook journal. Next week I'll show how I organize the pictures and such. This has become such a source of joy for me. It gives me a "place to go", where I can write out lists... and prose... and prayers... and Bible verses... all kinds of good things.

I know there are others who have shown their journals but it was Jewels' beautiful pictures that got me started. I miss you, my friend!
