More ponderings about dress and society

I was thinking last night that I don't remember writing much about dress of fashion before... well into my fifth year of blogging!  I do know I've written about the clothing (or lack thereof) of the college girls on campus.  I found it very interesting that "those in the know" about such things, who have been on campus for years and years, have come to realize the freshmen girls are the trashiest dressers!

There are a lot of theories but the two most reasonable are... they are breaking away from home for the first time and Mom/Dad aren't there to nix the outfits... and... they are very influenced by the "fashion" of the entertainment industry which they have been allowed to follow.  I remember telling Christopher (after seeing a girl standing on the street) that I remember a time when the police would assume she's among the world's oldest profession and arrested for indecent exposure!

The good news is... for the most part... the girls tend to dress more modestly to classes as they grow older.  Of course, it also helps when the wind chills turns below zero. ;)

When we were visiting Stephanie in October, I showed Elisabeth a blog by a young woman I admire.  The way she (and her sister) sews and assembles clothing has such style and shows they are beautiful inside and out... here.  In an age when little girls are influenced by a culture gone wrong, I am happy there are young women who show one can be stylish and creative and beautiful and modest.

Dear Brenda,
I was at the ob/gyn this week and noticed that the young pregnant women in the waiting room wore T-shirts that looked as though they had shrunk dramatically in the wash. What happened to maternity clothes?

Like you I'm continually noticing how "sharp" men and women dress in old movies. "Sharp" is an expression of my mother's. She grew up during the Depression and has always known how to make ends meet and still manage to look sharp.

Where do you get the cute vintage pictures on your posts?

I remember every Easter getting a new dress with a matching coat to wear to church along with a hat and white gloves. Remember when women wore corsages on mother's day?

Thanks for the post...as a mom of five boys I really notice the clothes, as do my sons. As for Karen's comment, yes the pregnant women show every bump, including their belly buttons...it really is different from my first pregnancy 27 years ago.

Thanks for writing about today's fashion or lack thereof. It's been on my mind a lot, especially with granddaughters growing up. I'm appalled at the fashions today. On another note...Sunday go to meetin' clothes... Blue jeans seems to be the norm today. Not for me. When my granddaughters come to stay I insist they wear a dress or skirt to church. They oblige their old fashioned grandma! I think I'll write a blog on this subject...thanks for the idea! Thanks for sharing.

I appreciate you sharing on this subject. As a grandmother of thirteen I've seen many changes over the years. An old commercial touted "You've come a long way, baby" and that is surely true of the gals. I regret to say, however that I believe in too many areas it has been in the wrong direction. May our nation return to "the old paths". God Bless

I totally agree, about the fashions of today. I also agree with Karen about how the women dress in the old movies. Also another thing I notice about then and now: men treated the women like ladies then, and I won't say what they are treated like now. I've noticed myself that if you dress like a lady, most of the time you'll be treated like a lady. I also love Rosie's posts, the way they live in "Wesleytown" is such a delight. I have come to know several young women through blogging who are standing up for Godly morals, and taking on more traditonal views of life. Thanks for the lovely posts on your blog. God Bless!

We live near a large college campus and all too often I feel like shielding my sons' eyes as we drive through. I know it's not rational (they're not even there), but I always wonder where their parents are. lol

Yesterday at a McDonald's, I heard my 35 yr. old son (who is not old-fashioned at all) comment that someone needed lessons in being a lady. I asked him if he was referring to the woman at the table behind us - her dress was very, very low cut and you could even see part of the bottom of her large breasts. He said no, he was referring to her daughter who was sitting with her skirt up, exposing herself.

I wish this experience was an anomaly, but it's not.

My mother always said that sloppy dress produced sloppy manners.

She was right. Just look at modern society (if you can stand to).

The dresses on the link you provided were great! What a refreshing change. Thanks!

Last year I started wearing skirts. I always wore jeans! In my journey to start dressing nicer, I started a fun blog to track my journey. I think you will like it. I am not much a great blogger, but I did have fun blogging on this.
