Sunday Afternoon Tea - Which window am I looking through?

I love the advice Corrie Ten Boom's father gave her about facing her fears.  He told  her (at least at that time in history) one does not purchase a ticket for the train until they need to ride on that train.  He said that, like the ticket, God gives us the grace we need at the time we need it.

She would write that she found great truth in that when she went through the horrors of a Nazi concentration camp and the years leading up to her arrest.  I expect what she went through was worst than her previous fears would even anticipate but God's grace did bring her through it and she went on to touch millions of lives with her testimony.

Of course, not everyone survived to tell about their experiences.  Sometimes God uses the difficult times to bring His people home.  Her much beloved sister died not too long before the camp was liberated.  Corrie had to come to terms with faith and grace and forgiveness and other emotions that only the Holy Spirit within could teach her in the years after the war.

I had been listening to some speculation early last week about what is happening in the world today and I went to bed one night more tense about the future than usual.  Then God spoke to me through a dream.  I've had such dreams before that I knew was from Him but not for a long time.

In the dream, it felt like my house was in a large earthquake. The shaking was so intense that the dishes in the china cabinet and on other pieces of furniture were rattling and I was certain that not only were they being broken, I thought the house was falling apart.

I looked out the big picture window and saw heavy CAT earth movers flattening everything around the house.  With absolutely no trouble, they were taking out houses as well as the forest.  In that strange way dreams have a way of doing, the window then became a television screen showing disturbing images from around the country.

In the dream, the shaking stopped and I opened the front door and was surprised that one of the huge CAT earth moving machines was so close, I could reach my hand out and touch the side of it.

I shut the door and felt as if God was telling me to look around the room.  Not only had no china or glass been broken, no pictures had even been shaken from the wall.  Everything was in the place that they should be.

Then He spoke to me in the dream in a voice that filled the room.  "The earthquake and shaking came through what you were watching when the window became a television screen, not the illusion of what was going on outside your window."

The Truth of what He was saying in that dream was immediate.  I had let the earth shattering fear enter my reality because I had been gazing through the computer screen or the television screen and not my actual picture window.  It was then that I woke up and I felt His peace and calm overflowing me in "real time".

He knows each of us far better than we know ourselves and He knows what to bring our way to fill us with peace.  Sometimes it is a Psalm, sometimes a story, at other times it is listening to a particular piece of music, or talking to a friend.  In this case, it was in the form of a dream.

Honestly, I hadn't realized just how much attention I was giving to various forms of media until the dream made it apparent.  I don't listen to the national news in the evening but I do catch tidbits here and there on Facebook and I listen to videos of various trusted Christians who share their opinions... usually in the form of very bad news.

I will still listen off and on to people I trust but no longer am I making a steady diet of the news and/or speculation about what the news means to us as Christians.  I need to remember that whatever happens in the future, it will be like what Mr. Ten Boom told his daughter... God will give us the ticket (grace) at the time we need it. I think that is what the old timers meant by... "Don't borrow trouble".

I also have to remember that "greater is He that is in me, than he that is in the world"!  The Bible tells us that satan goes around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he can destroy.  The real lion, the Lion of Judah, has control of my future and I need to always remember that.  We all do!

Thankful for Grace said...

Wow! What a dream/vision!! Like you, I have had to limit my exposure to the news. I have completely disengaged from Facebook, and I am only allowing myself to read a few blogs, and absolutely none that have argumentative, ugly comments. Before setting those limitations in place, I was really struggling with anxiety.

I read a devotional about a month ago, and while the woman wrote it right before election 2016, the same words are true here in 2020. No matter who wins the election, the king is still on the throne. And knowing that, and trusting in him, is where peace is found.

Blessings,

That was quite the dream! I'm amazed that you were up looking around. Even in a dream, I'd have been under the bed. 😏

Yes, I remind myself often of Matthew 6:34...sufficient unto the day is the trouble therein. It does no good to worry about tomorrow.

Have a blessed week...

Yes, as Patti said, the King is still on the throne. I do not get my news from TV, which is heavily slanted, I get news rather from print sources and a few news sites online. Our church has opened an evacuation shelter from the fire storms raging in our area. He said today "We can't stop the storm from raging, but we can love you."

That’s awesome and such good truth!

Tim always says that when the Lord returns/ end times come etc, it will be just like he said it would be but it’ll be different than we’ve thought it would look like!

We must keep our eyes on him, do the work he’s given to us to do for him, and trust him to be with us through it all!

Also, I believe that he gives each one the grace we each need for what we might be going through individually. It’s not a one size fits all Grace!

I've really had to think so hard about every thought I have and, especially, how I react to social media or news. I saw a post that said that when we find ourselves shaking our heads we should bow our heads and that's what I'm trying to do. Fear and anger can so easily become idols; let's pray together that we don't second guess God's wisdom and power and keep him on our heart's throne. Blessings and thanks for sharing this!

It is so wise to be careful in what we take in and to realize how it may be impacting us!

I love that you received that dream from the Lord. How comforting and encouraging!

I've found myself having to learn and relearn that lesson over the past several months...the lesson that when I focus on what's happening around me, in my actual life, it's much easier to trust in the Lord's sovereignty. Today I'm finding it particularly important to heed that wisdom:

I live in Louisville, where today is supposed to be a huge day of escalated protests (even more intense and potentially violent than usual) in response to the Breonna Taylor case. Local news and neighborhood social media sites have been buzzing with scary warnings. I don't live anywhere near downtown, but today may be the day when areas all over the city are targeted, so it may be that it hits literally closer to home for me today. Even so, at this moment, all is peaceful in my home and outside my window, and I'm relying on God to guide and direct me if that changes.

Brenda what a beautiful post. Thank you for sharing your wonderful thoughts that were given to you by the Holy Spirit. It is very challenging to not get caught up in what one sees or reads from tv and social media. I realize we need to be informed but not necessarily involved. My hubby reminds me that this earth is not my home - my home is in His eternal Kingdom and we are only visitors to this planet. Keep the faith friend.
