Moving "My Precious"

As my usual January practice, I've continued to organize here and there.   One huge change... the first time since the eight years we have lived here... I moved my mixer (aka: My Precious or Big Red).

It has been in a place of honor on my kitchen counter even though I have very little counter space.  But I have been baking less and less since there are just two of us (and both have to watch our sugar intake).  The real truth became apparent when I didn't bake much at all over the Holidays.

So one of my organizing projects for January was to do some switching around in the kitchen.  It meant a few canisters had to be moved to the garage pantry shelves but otherwise the change was easier than I expected.

The Professional size mixer along with the blender were moved to the refurbished sewing machine table which used to hold canisters and a few other items.

Ummm... you know one cooks a lot with onions when they deserve their own space... but I digress.

The kitchen counter now has about twice as much work space.   My husband was delighted except he moved the knives to the right of the Keurig.  Fine with me...  I am very pleased with the change, too.  Even if it is further evidence of an empty nest.

Oh, it wasn't until I enlarged the above picture that I realized there was a flash of fur in the background.  That deck table was moved into the family room to make space for the pipe repairs in the garage.  It became Victoria's favorite place to look outside when it is too cold to open a window in my study.... so we left it there.  Is she spoiled or what?  ;)

It's amazing what switching a few things around can do! By the way, the *first* thing I saw in the last pic was that "flash of fur"! Guess I tend to zero in on the sweet kitty pics! :)

How fun to open up some more work space on the kitchen counters, even if it does mean that The Precious was moved to a new home. Onions!! I am completely out of onions! Trying to figure out how to reach through the screen and pilfer just one of yours…….

I love it! Sometimes a simple change makes such a huge difference! I moved my Kitchen Aide to a small table that I had my daughter paint red and we had put in an awkward space at the top of our basement stair case. (I'll have to do a post to show it.) It has an outlet there and it is right in the kitchen still but now it is off the counter! More useable space. I love it!

What? Spoiled? Not Victoria with her own table! LOL. I keep my mixer in the closet. That's how seldom I do any baking. I also have a bowl for onions. What does a person do with them?

I moved my Kitchen Aid to the (gasp) basement. Its just the two of us as well, one being diabetic, so I don't bake much anymore either. Boo hiss. The simple things I do now can be accomplished by hand or a hand mixer. I did use the beast the other day to grind some venison stew meat that I had into burger. I was able to leave it downstairs and set it up on the small freezer.

Ah Brenda your post does me a world of good! I love the bean pot as a utensil holder!! I have one that was my moms in the basement, the lid disappeared years ago and I use it once a year on the 4th of July. It will come into the kitchen tomorrow! We also love onions, and use them in about every main dish. Love and Hugs, Nana

just love your pics! you have a knack for making the ordinary, extraordinary! I still have to have "my precious" on the counter-it is my "bread machine", and I use it at least once a week for that purpose alone. Thank you for sharing your life in pics...wonderful ideas for my own kitchen.

Oh Brenda your kitchen floor looks just like mine in my "old"kitchen. We put a kitchen addition on our house but haven't totally remodeled our old one. The floors look the same - except yours looks like it is much better shape. I think mine is about 30 years old. I live in the home I grew up in - and my grandparents put it in while I was in college -30 years ago - ;( I'm feeling old :) love your blog!!!!

I have a very small kitchen and very little counter space so I try to keep it sparse. It's easier to clean when there is not so much clutter. Love your new arrangement. Always looks homey and inviting. Blessings, Sharon D.

I love your splashes of red - it IS a happy colour! I love the 'A day hemmed in by prayer is less likely to unravel' - so true. Stay well Brenda & greetings from South Africa!

Our apartment had one orange wall that I thought I would hate, but I adapted to it by decorating all in browns with a few orange accents. Now those splashes of color make me happy. So I totally get your love for red.
