Screen Doors and Sweet Tea, a book review

Okay, now I remember why I said I wasn't going to write about politics, anymore. On to important subjects like books... and cooking... and cookbooks.

I saw this book reviewed on a couple other blogs and immediately put a hold on it at my library. Judging from how long it took to finally check it out, others were enjoying it, too. The front cover reminds me of the way my mother used to dress, before she decided it was okay for a lady to wear slacks.

I really enjoyed this book. I love cookbooks that have stories about each recipe, cookbooks that have recipes I've never seen before, and recipes that are (for the most part) easy to understand. This one has it all.

Although some recipes are those I'd never try since I live in the American Midwest and this Southern cook is... deep South! All that fish and gumbo... my guys would never go for them. On the other hand, there are plenty of great recipes I've written down to try when the weather remains chilly.

Her Strawberry Missionary Society Salad (or as my Southern cousins would say... congealed salad) looks yummy with different flavors of Jello, crushed pineapple, cream cheese, and heavy cream. Of course, it is in her diet chapter. :)

The Three Bean Salad looks lot like my Kentucky mother used to make. I crave the stuff but the guys, um... don't. I'll probably have to continue buying it a little at a time from the grocery's deli.

I have got to copy down her Three-Day Slaw recipe. I used to make something like this and I loved it.

I'm also going to try the Crumb Cauliflower recipe. I love to find good veggie recipes. I made roasted squash and roasted cauliflower yesterday for part of Sunday Dinner... yum.

Her most famous recipe from this book is Sweet Tea Pie. I have got to try it, just out of curiosity.

If you like good cooking and you live anywhere but the deep south (or you are from that area), check the book out of the library before buying it. However, if you live where gumbo is king... you'll probably love this book and use it all the time.

Thanks for explaining about Hillary. I get it.
I found a juicer today that I needed to order from Amazon, and I actually remembered to order it thru your widget. It cost $99 so hopefully that will help you get something nice or at least add to your Amazon totals.
No hard feelings, even tho' we disagree about Sarah Palin. :)

Looks like a fun book! I'll take your advice, though, and see if the local library system has it. Thanks for the review!

That looks like it would be a good book. I will have to add it to my list.

Like Cheryl, I'll check our library system to see if it's available. I better check quick though cuz we use the same library! hehe.

I didn't see all the comments concerning Hillary and very honestly I'm grateful I didn't. I totally understand your strategy decision. :o)
