Beautiful day for visitors!

Our friend's property is located near this cabin in the Wildflower Woods, sometimes known as Limberlost II.
My husband and his roommate from his freshman dorm at college are still great friends (both are now officially retired).  He and his wife dropped by for a visit today as they were traveling.

They live on property near one of the original Limberlost homes owned by Gene-Stratton Porter.  I think it is called Wildflower Cabin?  The largest city next to it is Ft. Wayne, Indiana.

We drove by and saw the cabin at a distance when we visited them many years ago.  That visit included a trip to the Middlebury Festival (Amish country) and dinner at one of our favorite restaurants... Das Dutchmen Essenhaus.

Speaking of Limberlost and all... I checked a video of Girl of the Limberlost out of the library when Christopher was much younger.  I popped it in the VCR and after a few minutes took it out and never watched the rest of it.

They had filmed it where there are MOUNTAINS!  Had they never read the book?  Northeastern Indiana has no mountains.  I know Gene-Stratton Porter later moved to California but that is not where Limberlost is located.   I mean, that is the whole point of the book.  Sigh, I digress...

They brought their laptop computer to show us pictures of the Michigan lighthouse where they stayed this last summer.  It is a program where people pay to stay a week at one of the lighthouses in Michigan. Then the week one is there, they give tours of the lighthouse and explain the history (after receiving training).

It was fascinating to hear how the lighthouses were built and maintained, this one from the 1800's.  We showed them the print of "Big Red", the lighthouse in Holland (Michigan) that we have displayed on our kitchen wall.  We never lived in the lighthouse but we visited a lot the nearly nine years we lived in Holland.

While it was nice to make contact again with old friends, I admit to being very tired.  But it was worth it.  I can always nap tomorrow...  ;)

I fell in love with Girl of the Limberlost in high school and went on to read many of her books. But I was terribly sad when I realized the Limberlost itself no longer exists. At least her books give people a sense of it.

We've only seen the movie, the kids thought it was okay but were not that interested in it. We must read the book.

We hate when movies get it so very wrong - especially when they change the whole 'theme' of the movie.

Ahhhhh! You were not so very far from where I live! Harlan, Indiana is just a few miles outside of the Fort Wayne city limits - north and east. I am well familiar with the places you visited with your friends. It sounds like they are enjoying quite the adventures in their retirement...

Your conversation with your son sounds interesting. It's good to learn from and stimulating to interact with the younger generation(s), isn't it?
