Storms and questions and answers

To make you smile... Mrs. C. and her kitty.
We are under a Winter Storm Warning as a combination of snow and sleet falls outside the French door windows onto the deck.   Heavier snow and high winds are to be upon us soon.

I do hope this is the last snowstorm of the season.  Although I admit since we were able to get all of our necessary errands run yesterday... mine in the morning, Hubby's in the afternoon... I'd much rather have snow than that cold rain.

Anyone commenting now will find the dreaded Word Verification pop up.  I was receiving hundreds of spam comments each week and Blogger stopped picking up all of them long ago.  So I found myself having to sort through much spam to get to publish real comments.  Please don't let Word Verification stop you from comments... there are so few as it is.

As for the spam?  Not one has gotten through since Word Verification was implemented.  :)

I thought I'd answer a few questions that came up recently...

No... I receive no help from the State other than the right to purchase reduced cost insurance.  The thought of them paying for diabetic shoes gave me a smile, although the insurance may pay for prescription shoes but (thank God) I don't need them.

I learned about SAS shoes from my mother-in-law, who first wore them as a nurse.  My father-in-law was definitely one who was more cheap than frugal (affected by the Depression in a very adverse way) but he also believed in buying very good shoes.

I bought my first pair of SAS shoes long ago when I was going to be doing a lot of walking on a trip to San Francisco.   I have two pairs of their sturdy tie shoes that are in great shape but alas... my sandals were purchased when we lived in Detroit.  That's how well-made SAS shoes are but even they do not last forever.

Neither my former specialist nor my present doctor are thrilled with diabetics wearing sandals but since I told them it was either that or going barefoot... they said SAS sandals are "okay" for me to wear.

Hubby says it's my mother's Kentucky DNA that comes out in my dislike of wearing shoes... she's no longer here to give him a Gibb's slap on the side of the head (NCIS fans will "get it").

Kim answered the question about the Phillip's New Testament Translation of the Bible in Comments.  I like this translation very much.

It was once used a great deal more often than it is today.  I remember reading in one of Elisabeth Elliot's books that she carried a Phillip's New Testament.

We lay rows of heavy garden plastic sheeting between the raised beds and then put mulch on top.  However, last year the weeds eventually broke through and all of our garden (raised beds and rows) looked very bad by the end of the season... a result of excess heat and drought as weeds loved it and veggies did not.

When we first went to food pantries, I was embarrassed.  When we were in school (me in undergrad and Hubby in graduate school), if someone told me we'd end up standing in lines for food and any help we could receive at our age I wouldn't have believed them.

We did everything right... went to school, tithed, had a savings account, etc.  However, being rather Reformed in my thinking, I do believe God is in control and if He has allowed this to happen... rather than stomping my feet and complaining... we do the best we can given the circumstances.

I truly have seen God work miracles... amazing miracles.  Such as money arriving in the mail when I hadn't told anyone of a specific need.  Miracles like clothing I need at Goodwill when I actually have some cash on me (which is very rare) or being given an automobile (twice).

I've learned that there are gifts we can give God... faith, trust, a good attitude when we don't understand, and a thankful heart.

I should have known when, as a teenager, He gave me Proverbs 3:5,6 as my life's verse that interesting days were ahead.  ;)

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
    and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
Proverbs 3:5,6 NIV

I've had bunches of spam, too. Guess I'll end up with W.V. I'm so disappointed.

I enjoyed reading your "answers" to peoples' questions...It is so helpful to know where people are "coming from".

I used Phillips back in the day. One particular verse has stuck in my mind - Romans 12:2 "Don't let the world squeeze you into its mold" is the way I recall it.

Hello, Although I don't blog, I enjoy your blog. As our economical/financial situation is practically identical to yours, I easily relate. So, I hope this doesn't sound hateful. But after mentioning a purchase (such as clothes from Goodwill) you always seem to include a negative statement (e.g.,cash which I rarely have). You seem to dwell on negative aspects which I find myself doing at times also. Many people are worse off than we are financially.

Hi Brenda - we are bracing for the same storm! Thankfully the pantry is full (thanks to your helpful suggestions), the children have done their emergency preparedness chores, and our home is now as ready as it can be. I'm sorry you've been so badly spammed - that's happening with my blog too, though to a lesser extent. It can be discouraging for sure, but it par for the course in this day and age. Well the children are getting lunch ready for us, so my time of blog reading is up for now! May the Lord continue to be your portion and your provider! He is forever faithful!

Anonymous, I don't see it as dwelling on the negative. I have new readers each week who start reading because they are on limited income.

So I do tend to reinforce the idea that one can live with little cash. Hopefully enough people will realize I'm not complaining... only giving others hope.

I have had spam as well.....something I've been fortunate in NOT getting before. I'm not sure if I have commented here. I enjoyed your post - it's kind of nice to 'hunker down' and feel all cozy inside when it is so NOT outside! We have been having some wild wind here in south Texas and I worry my gazebo canopy is going to fly off!

God is GOOD.....ALL the TIME!! Amen!

God is faithful...I'm learning that more and more and I think many of us will be learning his faithfulness in new ways in the near future!

Thanks for answering the questions on the blog - I find it so interesting!

Won't be commenting much with the spam words. I'm so sorry you had to go to this, but reading them is much too difficult for my eyes.
Blessings to you.

To the anonymous person who said she wouldn't be commenting much due to the word verification: I find that if I cannot read/type it correctly it gives me a different word until I can. The numbers are awfully tiny though, aren't they? I am reminded of an older woman who asked her younger friend to help her with her computer problems because she was SURE there was a hacker IN it. She wanted the hacker OUT. I laugh but with all this crazy new technology I do not understand how to use most of it and don't plan on learning.
Brenda, I kind of envy you your hunkering down. I suppose the winter is getting rather tiresome though. But it is the Lord who gives it and He is good. I know you are not complaining - just ready for spring. :-)

I really enjoy your blog. And I do not think you are complaining. I just think you are being honest, and I thank you for that. I am not in your position financially, but I know that God could choose at any time to take us through that, and I want to be be found ready and faithful. I glean a lot of encouragement and good ideas from your writing. I know that if I learn to live frugally now, then if and when I need to, it will not be so difficult on my family.
I love all your pretty home decor items and I especially love Victoria!
Have a lovely day and God bless you and your family!

My own blog was becoming full with spamming notes so I did also go back to word 'identification'... sorry. It is a real pain to go through the spam notes. I really agree with you.

I think J.B.Phillips was either Elisabeth Elliot's father or grandfather - both were writers and have published books. I found I have a copy of the J.B.Phillips translation of the New Testament. It was owned by a very dear friend of mine who has since gone to be with the Lord, but she left me the best thing - her books!!

One thing I love about your blog is your willingness to share your heart. For those who struggle along in life it is a wonderful thing to pick up words of encouragement when it seems like all you can see is the dirt road in front of your face. On days when I find things difficult, I usually come to your blog and feel like I have found someone who has walked a difficult road before me and I come away with a glimmer of hope. I am so glad that you write and share your heart.

I was wondering about that, when I commented on the next post. Too bad about the spam.
Glad you are set to ride out the storm. I do appreciate your attitude about your finances, and trusting the Lord.

Hi Brenda,
Just wanted to encourage you. I see your comments as God providing ... even to having the cash when you stop by Goodwill and there is something you need - and sometimes just something pretty to boost the moral. I think that is lovely. God is so very good! "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father of Lights in whom is no variation or shadow of turning." Keep up the good work! Pam (SD)
