On the coffeetable... books to read from now through Thanksgiving

Except for various decorating and cookbooks, these are the books I have chosen for October and November reading.

They are...
  • The Best of Stillmeadow by Gladys Taber
  • Lark Rise to Candleford by Flora Thompson
  • Still Glides the Stream by Flora Thompson
  • Christy by Catherine Marshall (Re-read)
  • The Country of the Pointed Firs by Sarah Orne Jewett (in process of reading)
  • The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame (my favorite children's book to re-read)
All of these have been on my bookshelf for at least a year, waiting their turn to be read or re-read.  What do they have in common?  They take me to another time.. all having to do with Home and Place.

Christy is a favorite of both my husband and me and probably the book I have re-read the most.  I haven't read it in years, though.

The Wind in the Willows is not only my favorite children's book but an Excellent Read for any age.  I know it is lovely because it makes me want to take tea with... ummm... moles and rats.

Some may be bumped onto the Winter List as I have no desire to hurry through any reading while snuggled beneath a warm throw blanket... with a cup of tea... and a scented candle... at my side... and perhaps a Maine Coon kitty.  :)

I'll write about the few books read in September next week and I am STILL working on the Recommendations List as I get a chance.

I didn't even have a dime in my purse tonight when we went to the library; usually this doesn't bother me, but the Friends of the Library are having their semi-annual sale and right there on top of the children's table was a lovely illustrated copy of The Wind in the Willows. Maybe just maybe it will still be there on Saturday when it's all-you-can-get-in-a-bag-for-$1.00. Gladys Taber was one of my mother's favorites, as well as mine, but I haven't read her books for years. It's time to dust them off and re-read them. Also, I've wanted to read the Flora Thompson books, but don't have any and neither does our library.

And what in the world are we both doing up in the middle of the night??

Thanks, I'm making my library list now. I read Wind in the Willows to my children when they were about 5 and 7 and it became the 7 year old's favorite. I love books and reading others comments on them. Looking forward to more comments. I also think I'll read Christy first.

I've never read Christy - I just remember the tv show a bit. I'll check that one out from the library. I just finished Depletion and Abundance which was very thought provoking.

I love reading Gladys Taber's writings. They take me back to a simpler time. When I first read them our kids were young, we had no television and lived in the Northwoods. Now they are all grown, we live in SE TN and the television is an ever-present reality (though I would GLADLY fling it out the window ~smile~).

What a wonderful pile of books to be read! I love all of them, though I've never really read Flora Thompson's Still Glides the Stream. D.E. Stevenson has a book by the same title, taken from Wordsworth. These are good books filled with good thoughts! I think I'll have to gather some fall books for myself!

Now that looks like a great list for fall and winter reading. Your comment about taking tea with rats and moles...yes! I always want to take tea with Mr. and Mrs. Beaver (TLTW and the Wardrobe) I remember loving Christy, but have not ever reread it. Perhaps it is time.

I have been remiss in never reading the Wind in the Willows...I shall remedy that soon.

Looks like a great selection of books. My family just listened to an unabridged audio version of Christy and we were all spellbound. Great book. We also just listened to Catherine Marshall's A Man Called Peter. What an inspiration!! Enjoy your reading.

I have a vivid memory of purchasing "The Wind in the Willows" at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry" when I was eight years old. My mom told me she loved that book when she was a little girl, so I was excited to have it.
I'll have to look around to see if I still own that book. I remember giving it to my oldest daughter when she was eight.

I'm reading Wind in the Willows with some of my little ones right now, and it's definitely a favorite. Grahame has such a way with words. I haven't read any of Taber's books, yet, but I have a copy of her Stillmeadow Sampler waiting for me. Christy sounds wonderful.

Don't delay reading the Best of Stillmeadow. It's a terrific book.
After a crazy day it's so relaxing to read about the old house in the country, the dogs and cats and all her friends and neighbours.

I read Jillian Dare during jury duty this week, and am finishing up the Inklings/Oxford Chronicles right now - which has me rereading LOTR! I love it when one book leads to another so well. I've read the first of Lark Rise to Candleford - perfect for the longer days of fall. I have read all the Narnia books to my husband on road trips - I need to dig out my copy of Wind in the Willows next.
