A passion for teacups

I need something cheerful.  The days continue to be long and dark. It is cold here and getting colder.  The roads are too bad for my less-than-brave driving as the county roads are covered with drifting snow.

So, I'm getting all warm and cozy drinking tea and looking at teacups.  :)

My apologies for the photos but the winter darkness makes using the flash necessary these days.

I collect both bone china and vintage cups like the rose tea cup on the lower right above.

My corner china cabinet is the one place in the house I can have all the pink and girlie stuff I want and no male comments about it.

The picture above was taken a year or two ago but it shows where I keep many of my teacups not on display.  They are nicely washed and ready for use for a tea party.

I just love beautiful china of all kinds and orphan tea cups and plates are still very inexpensive to look for at thrift stores and Goodwill.

This tray sits on top of my little microwave oven in the kitchen.  For the first time in years, I changed my everyday teapots.  Both of these are from Goodwill, the little Pfaltzgraff teapot was shown recently when I located a matching cup at Goodwill for 99 cents.

The fun yellow teapot was one of those Goodwill finds that I practically knocked someone out of the way to grab it off the shelf.  I've been wanting a cheery looking teapot!

Well, not really... but I thought about it.  I use the larger teapot much less than the smaller one during those rare times I need to brew more than two cups.

Sigh... dish love may be an illness but I have no desire for the cure.  :)

I suffer from old book lust, fountain pen lust (don't ask), notebook and paper lust, and even dish lust, although tea cups and pots aren't the dish of choice for me. Oh - and I forgot basket lust and scented oils lust and the dishes type? Blue, cobalt blue and old fashioned Chinese looking blue pattern on white. And bowls because ours are always disappearing/breaking. I think I have hoarder's disease (sounds official, doesn't it?).

On another note - please pray that somehow my butterfly plants make it through this brutal weekend. We could have snow in Florida - yes - you read that right. Snow, sleet - as far south as Orlando maybe - or farther....

Oh, Brenda, I always love to see your pretty teacups. And I think they are a great cure for a dreary day - think I should go look at mine! Our weather is different than yours. We have the usual, common rainy, gray skies of winter in Oregon and there's nothing like a gorgeous plate or teacup or teapot to brighten the long wintery days. ~Adrienne~

I love tea cups!!!! I don't have that many maybe someday. My 2 little girls and I had a tea party yesterday. We had a rough day of homeshcooling and needed to re-group. I also wanted to tell you we come to your blog almost everday to listen to the music while we do school. Have a wonderful weekend!

And, how could you share your lovely dishes with us if you didn't "suffer" dish love. A very nice collection and I know that I've told you that I like how you store your tea cups.

Loved seeing your cup collection. I use to collect china cups and still have a few. You can get them pretty cheap here at yard sales. Hugs

I think you are such a kindred spirit, Brenda, and your tea cups cheered me up no end today. Not that I wasn't happy before, but it IS a bit gray around here (though we've had intermittent sunny moments). The tea cups make me smile. I collect (without ever having set out to do so) lots of old and new books, tea cups and pots, quilt fabric, figurines inherited from my mother, old linens from my mother and grandmother and times living in Hungary. Now I am trying to "bless other people with my stuff" as my daughter Emily says. I'm 65 this month and my point of view changes!

Just sad that neither of my daughters like what they call "china people". But they make me remember happy times.

Your yellow teapot looks like it would warm up a person even before the tea got into it!

i suffer from the same malady. Orphaned dishes on a thrift store shelf, needing love, and use. Only with all 6 kids, they must be kept up higher. Wish i could come and have a cup!
Blessings, and encouragement,

I'm kind of clumsy and tend to drop things. I've got some china cups that were my mother's everyday pattern, but have never used them . I'm a mug collector. I always feel a certain ahhhhhhhh when I get a special mug out that reminds me of a trip or a place or a person. I have a blue stoneware mug bought at the Shaker Village in Ky that I'm using today . Yesterday, was my Red Cardinal Peace mug that at $2.99 was a steal from cracker barrel in my opinion..this thing is gorgeous. I have a sweet Christmas mug my mother gave me, so I always think her when I use it. Maybe these are THINGS making us feel better, but so much bertter than drugs , alcohol, food, etc.
Brenda, I wish you could open a tea shop and serve tea/ scones/ and share your wisdom and coziness. I'd be there.

Love looking at these...and that it a a "perky" teapot...lol. (I'm just basically using a big ol' mixing bowl in the mircrowave for a teapot right now....but it's working for me!)

Oh I am in full blown envy! Forgive me please. This is a new lust of mine, tea cups and tea pots. I bought my first 2 orphan cups with matching saucers this week. I cant wait to find a tea pot. I am on mission now to find a home for at least one orphan every time I go to town. Which I will say is not often because it is 45 miles to one town and 80 to the next. I live in the south, and now that my boys have grown and married, I desire to find the more feminine southern ways. To me there is nothing better than curling up in the evening with my yarn, crochet hook and a cup of hot tea. Oh, and of course a good book.

Oh yes, I wonder if one day you might be lead to teach us how to care for both bone china and porcelain. I have only enjoyed tea in my new cup a few times and I already notice staining. I am deeply saddened. What am I doing wrong?

Many blessings, as I so enjoy your blog, though I am only a new follower, I will be an avid reader now! Thanks for the beautiful pictures, I feel justified in my new love…LOLOL

Sherri

I don't think I've ever told you this, but the antique china cabinet that holds my mom's china now, was once my grandmother's; and grandmother had it filled, stacked two high, with tea cups and saucers. Sadly, sadly, sadly, my aunt kept all but a couple of my grandmother's tea cups, and I now have those two sets carefully tucked away behind glass to enjoy. I always love seeing your drawer of tea cups! It seems so welcoming!

Shared passions=true friends :)~:)

We have Sunday evening Tea Parties at our home w/ the family. So fun!

And I use to have a lot of different tea cups/pots, but we had a house fire in '05 and lost them all :( -- I've started again, but this time I'm more selective w/ my choices and display and USE them often as you never know when you won't have them and that's what they are for - to enjoy :D!!!

I had to smile at your post. :) My mom was just taking pictures of my teacup collection last night because she thought it would be nice on a blog or something. :)

Thanks for sharing those pictures Brenda! I got started on my teacup love when my college roommate hosted a wedding shower tea, and gave all of us a matching set! I took note of how you store yours and have copied it- the best part is that now my husband doesn't freak out when I bring home new ones, because he can't see so many of the old ones.

I love my pot of tea each weekend morning! My mom & cousins & I take turns hosting Jane Austen tea parties - we watch movies & have tea with all the fixings about 4 times per year.

dish love ... I am so with you there! I don't have any desire to be cured either! I was sick Christmas day, and it was *just* our little family, but it made my heart sing (and my head thump) to get out the pretty old china and silver and serve our simple feast! I haven't been thrifting in *forever* it seems, but I'm praying I'll find something pretty next time - perhaps a sweet salt and pepper set?

You know, you have quite a flower garden in your corner cupboard! That would cheer anyone up! So pretty!

Warmly,

Matty (who is suffering from too much dark, cold, and wind, too! )
