The Pantry, a book review

I was thrilled to be the winner of The Pantry; It's History and Modern Uses from Manuela's lovely blog called The Feathered Nest.

It is one of my "when I get a chance to relax" blogs where I can find beautiful ideas. I love perusing such blogs and hers is a good one that I recently discovered. When I received the book, it was wrapped in such lovely gift wrap with a pretty card I used as a bookmark. :)

I thought I'd enjoy this book and I wasn't disappointed. It is worth owning it just for the pictures alone. However, I found the history of the pantry to be fascinating. Most of my pantry items are on metal shelves in the garage but my special items (including many used for baking) are in the tall, yellow pantry in my kitchen. I love the original peeling paint on the outside and the old red shelves.

I grew up with my mother always keeping a pantry. No matter how small of a house or tight the budget, she had an extensive pantry with items stocked as they went on sale. Except when she was no longer able to do her own shopping, then I always found it amusing that the only item she made certain she had plenty of was coffee...lots of cans of coffee. Yes, that fruit didn't fall far from the tree!

The author is Catherine Seiberling Pond, who (besides spending a long time writing this book...and it shows by the quality) also has contributed to Old House Interiors, New England Home and my (our) beloved Victoria.

You can find more of her work and some pictures from The Pantry on her lovely blog. Those readers who love vintage "stuff" as well as my fellow Victoria fans will definitely enjoy taking a cup of tea and spending some time looking through this destination. Just be careful not to spill your tea on the keyboards. Don't ask how I know. :)
