Book Girl, a review and a give away!

"This is a book that explores in memoir and story what it means to be a book girl, for story to suffuse and shape a woman's experience, for books to walk with her as she navigates the varied seasons of her life."  Sarah Clarkson, Book Girl

I have been looking forward to this book since Sarah first mentioned she was "thinking about" writing such a book.  Book Girl is both a celebration of women who find joy in reading and chapter-upon-chapter of book recommendations.

If you were the girl who slipped under the covers with a flashlight at night to read one more chapter of an Anne book... or the woman who happily stayed home from a party with a cup of tea, a throw around your shoulders, and perhaps a candle burning on the coffee table so you can read the next chapter in a mystery... you are a book girl and this is your book.

Book Girl opens with Sarah's chapters about growing up loving books and what it means to find joy in the reading.  She offers advice in getting the most out of your reading, as if she were your dear friend chatting over a morning cup of coffee.  Even in the book recommendation chapters, the titles she recommends have that feeling of an old friend being introduced to another.

It is those chapters which will keep it on the shelf where books reside that are referred to often.  For the chapters are not just in the form of lists but there is information about the books.

The "Book List" chapters include:
  • Books Can Broaden Your World
  • Books Can Shape Your Story
  • Books Can Stir You to Action
  • Books Can Cultivate the Imagination
  • Books Can Foster Community
  • Books Can Open Your Eyes to Wonder
  • Books Can Deepen Your Soul
  • Books Can Impart Hope

The good thing about recommending this book by a friend is that I know whatever Sarah recommends will be safe.  Perhaps not safe in the same way that Aslan is good but not safe... for books have a way of rocking one's world.  However, I would not fear buying an age appropriate book Sarah recommends for my granddaughters.

Tyndale sent along an extra copy of Book Girl with my review copy just so I can share one with a blog reader.  So all you have to do is to comment on this review post and Friday morning I will draw out of the electronic hat the name of the winner.

If I do not hear from the winner by Monday, another name will be pulled out of the electronic hat.

Book Girl was provided by the publisher for the sake of review but the opinions are my own.

I have always enjoyed reading books - from the time I was a young girl and looked forward to the bookmobile coming to our neighborhood and I still enjoy reading books today at 65 years of age. I am looking forward to reading this new book by Sarah Clarkson.

This book sounds delightful, the section "Books that give you hope" sounds like a good one for me to read. I am a Book Girl, which explains my choice of career as a librarian, like my mother before me.

Sarah is THE book girl! I'm sure the contents are just as delightful--if not more--than the lovely cover.

This book looks so good. I was definitely one of those girls who took a book and flashlight to bed with her and my mom often told me to stop reading and go outside and play, so I'm really looking forward to reading this.

This is the perfect book for a Book Girl! I used to read by the light of a nightlight after I went to bed! I wish this book had been around then to guide my reading, I admit to some twaddle years in my growing up years!

I once read that, "life is too short not to read books"'. So many lives to live through the eyes of others. Books are my escape from my disability and I am never bored because I love to read.

This sounds like such a good read! I really didn’t become a “book girl” until I became an adult, but my daughter became one as soon as she learned to read! And now we are reading to her firstborn! At 15 months he Loves his books and often will bring us one to read to him! So Fun! I think there’s little doubt he will be a “ book boy”! 😉 Excited about the give-away!
Blessings to you,
Laura C. (WA)

Brenda: You always take the time to do a good, down-to-earth review of the books you read. I love that you list the chapter headings, as it gives me an idea what is in a book without having to scroll through "Look Inside" on Amazon. Keep reading.....it's a real blessing in our lives!

As a young reader, I usually had a couple on the go at once. Your review has shown what a good read this book will be and it is nice to have an opportunity to win a copy.

Since I have retired, I find myself reading a LOT. I want to read EVERYTHING, but know there's only so much time in my day. When I read a really good to me book, I want everyone I know to read it. Most don't seem interested and I have to realize they are not in the same season of life as me. This sounds like a great book. I hope I win!

I've been an avid reader all my life but sometimes I'm at a loss as to what to read these days except for the regular scriptural and religious based books that keep showing up on my list. So this book sounds like it might inspire me to once again broaden my reading style.
