Book Talk - July Reading

I'm continuing with light summer reading this month.   I was tempted to take a Francis Schaeffer book off the shelf and add it to the stack until common sense returned.  No, Schaeffer is definitely a cold weather read when my mind is not drifting to the need to hoe the garden.

I've already read The Courtship Basket and it will be reviewed soon.  It is an excellent light summer read! Braving It just arrived and it is next on my reading radar so it can be reviewed soon. 

I mentioned My Heart's in the Lowlands recently.  I will start on it when the review book has been read.  It is a travel memoir by Liz Curtis Higgs about a trip she took in Scotland.  Can't wait to read it!  It was a gift from a good friend who knew I loved reading about Great Britain.

I read and loved An Everlasting Meal a few years ago. It was one of the most influential books about food and cooking I have ever read.  I can't tell you how many times since first reading it, I looked at veggies I almost put in the compost bowl and realized they could be used in soup instead.  I gave my paperback copy to my daughter a couple years ago but when a used hardback copy became available very cheap... it was purchased immediately.

Kitchen Gypsy was on my June list but I'm slowly reading through it.  It is the kind of book that is good to have on the coffee table when I only have a short time to read.  Fans of Joanne Weir's cooking shows will love learning about the influences in her life.  With recipes no less!  I have enjoyed her book so much, I mentioned it to her on Facebook.  She said she loved writing it.

Savor is the gorgeous cookbook I used part of my Amazon credit last month to purchase.  I had planned to purchase a few items to update our grab and go bag.  Really, I did.  But Amazon knows how to draw you in entice you based on past purchases so what popped up but... Savor.  I am so weak when it comes to beautiful cookbooks.  Especially those with recipes that are healthy but tasty (at least they look that way on the page).

The only negative reviews at the time (and there were not many) was that you can tell the writer is affluent and many of us can't afford her recommendations.  Experienced cooks can get around that fairly easily.  However, most of the reviews for the book's beauty and the recipes were very good.  I wasn't disappointed at all when it arrived.  I've been picking it up and getting to know it up close and personal.  A few recipes have been bookmarked that I hope to try soon.

I'll probably add a couple books to review by the end of the month but for now... this is quite a lot to keep me out of trouble.  Maybe.
