I Finally Like My Family Room

Instead of a "My World" post, I thought I'd just share photos I took recently of my Family Room.  For the first few years we lived in this house, it was my least favorite room.  I kept tweaking it and trying a few different looks but it always came out bland.

Then one day... as I was looking at a photo of French doors in a magazine... I was thinking how beautiful they were.  Then I thought, "Wait, mine look kind of like that behind those ugly drapes!".  Wallah, down came the drapes and the beautiful woodwork was shown in its' glory and that was the beginning of the transformation.  About seven years ago...  so I'm slow.

But I like where it is now, kind of an outdoorsy meets cottage meets 1990s era furniture mixture.  But it works.

The woodwork that was hidden by ugly drapes.  The blinds are at that level so Victoria can see outside the window.
Scene from the Lazy Boy recliner.  That is a feather tree on the mid-century corner cabinet.  Christmas clearance purchase.  But like so many Primitive decorative items, it looks good displayed all year long.
I just returned that lamp back to the Family Room where it belongs.
My daughter-in-law gave me the calendar for Christmas.  It is perfect there!
The vintage suitcases hold old Victoria magazines.
Our old sofa that has been through kids and teens and has pillows under the pillows.  But it works...  Love the rainbow
Where the Family Room meets the Kitchen.  The TV show is American Ride on the BYU Channel.
My first piece of furniture, a hope chest that was a gift from my mother when I turned sixteen.

It looks like a very pleasant room to me. I did not know where it was in relation to your kitchen. I see that you have an engineering marvel (as John says) with your plants on top of the picnic baskets. Don't be tempted to pick one up! ☺ Some rooms take a long time to come together. I am trying to "fix" the bedroom that is not pleasing to me without doing the big things like painting and new woodwork, etc. Doubt that I'll be sharing that.

It looks SO welcoming & comfortable. No wonder you "finally like" it! Your hope chest is a lovely one. (I gave both of OUR daughters one on their 16th birthdays, too!)

What a cozy environment in which to relax in. : ) Having all your favorite things around you is what home is all about - it looks wonderful.

I like the light in your family room. Your home is obviously filled with the things you love, which makes it such a welcoming place. It reflects that narnia magic you so often write about. The only thing missing in these pictures was miss Victoria!

It's warm and cozy. I like seeing where you read and lay on the couch to watch tv. Fun to picture it.

I appreciate the light painted paneling in your family room--a nice backdrop for whatever combination of collectibles and furniture you choose to arrange there. I'm thinking the mini-blinds open the space up and make it seem larger and airier than it did when the drapes were in place.

Teal and red is such a wonderful colour combination - I like the way you have used them in your living room.

Thank you for inviting us 'in'. It is always lovely to imagine a person in their particular space (rather than the merely imagined one).

It looks quite charming and welcoming. The best kind of family room, imo!

This is a lovely room that will make people feel happy when they are in it. Relaxed and happy. And we know our bodies and minds work better when we are relaxed and happy. They do. It looks really good!

Oh, it looks like a nice place to relax and feel at home. Don't you love it when you do that one thing and then the room just comes together (per your note on the drapes). The same thing keeps happening to me each time I move. I dislike the family room but then we move everything around to make room for the Christmas tree and suddenly the new furniture arrangement makes everything feel just right! I think that has happened in the last four places I've lived. :)

I like your family room too!! I like that it is personal (and not a "cookie cutter" room), and that it is filled with the things that bring you joy! Isn't that the best style of decorating? I love your feather tree. I am slightly envious of your French doors which let in all of that glorious light. I absolutely love your hope chest, even more so with the knowledge that it was a gift from your mother.

(I am a slow decorator too. I'll live with an empty wall until I have inspiration...or the money to act on an inspiration.) :)

Pretty! And it's nice to hear that you kept tweaking until it was a room you really loved. So often it's easy to settle for "meh." Fun that it wasn't costly, either -- just had to take down some drapes to find the magic :)

The room looks very cozy and full of your favorite things. It says "home".
I received that same calendar for Christmas, too.

Thanks for sharing, yes the French doors look so nice with all of that light coming in! Also so nice that your kitchen is open to the family room.

I love your "pillows under the pillows" as I thought I was the only one to do that!
