Share your favorite books and authors!

Okay, I'm keeping this post up through Saturday to give you time to share your favorite books and authors with us.  Write out your favorites even when they have been mentioned already.  It's always interesting to see who and what titles are listed most often.

Also, feel free to come back again with another comment if you think of an author or title later in the week.  I'll be back on Sunday and will assemble the list in a Recommendations #2 post starting next week... "God willing and the creek don't rise".  :)

I'd love your comments.  I've been seriously thinking of giving up blogging as it seems there are so few comments these days and perhaps seven years is the lifetime of the blog?  We'll see... but first I wanted to get in another Recommendations List!

Please share your...
  • Favorite Authors - Fiction
  • Favorite Books - Fiction
  • Favorite Authors - Nonfiction
  • Favorite Books - Nonfiction

Just saying hi, because I never comment. I read your blog through google reader, which doesn't lend itself to commenting. But I do read all of your posts and enjoy them very much. I especially like your book recommendations, and have "met" many new favorite authors through your blog! I don't think I have any recommendations that I didn't get from you!

Marla

I certainly hope you do not give up your blog. I may not comment very often (bad me) but I really enjoy your writing, especially your pantry posts and Sunday afternoon tea.

My favorite non-fiction author is E.G. White - I love "Steps to Christ" "Mount of Blessing" and the whole "Conflict of the Ages" series. I have received such a blessing reading these books. I am not really into reading non fiction- but I have to say I LOVED reading the Little House on the Prairie series - and that was just about a year or so ago that I finally read through the series. I sure missed something special by not reading these books during my childhood. Anyway I really enjoy your blog and hope that you continue to share your wisdom, experience and love for God with us. God bless, Lisa :O)

I hope you don't give up blogging as I love to read but just feel so awkward commenting to someone I really don't know. I feel like such a stalker. I am not blogger so perhaps my feelings are not the norm...I don't know.
My favorite books right now are the Call the Midwife series by Jennifer Worth. I have watched the PBS show and enjoyed it so much and now love the books too. I usually enjoy reading religious type books by John Ortberg or the like but have been in a book club for a year and we read everything from the Steve Jobs biography to The Great gatsby and I appreciated each book although I was not in love with each one.

I will get my list of books to you soon but just wanted to pop in and assure you that I would greatly miss your blog!!!!! I am so grateful for you :o) Dee

Consider reading a debut novel by Marjan Kamali — Together Tea — that just came out to rave reviews. A warm and wonderful Mother-daughter story that speaks across all cultures. It's about an Iranian-American family, love, and finding the place you truly belong.

Please don't give up blogging! You are important to your readers! Because of your pantry recommendations, my family has averted a disaster as Medicaid is refusing to pay for a seizure medicine because it might not be needed(!). They gave us no warning, just flagged the prescription and won't allow it to be filled. The doctor says it's imperative but a low level administrator across the country thinks he knows better. My husband and I rejoiced, because due to your tips about making sure you have medicine on hand, we had a few extra days of meds to get us through last weekend. I pick up the prescriptions as quickly as possible and I had been able to build up a tiny--5 day--stash. It's gone, but we are now on a 4 day emergency prescription that was initially rejected and took over 2 hours of--well, demanding--to secure. We still don't have an answer about the actual prescription. But through God's grace and your helpful ideas, we have made it this far! Thank you for blogging!

So good to visit again!

My favorite book of all time is "Little Women." I know, right? Not what you would expect. But, if one reads it carefully, there are so many lessons: love one another, make the best of where we are, follow our dreams, stand strong in faith, run while we can, find joy in the every day, be grateful for the meal in front of us, share with others... You see why I love it so!

Can't wait to see what others read!

Hi Brenda, I'm sorry I haven't posted a comment of late -- I've been traveling and then busy with guests coming to visit me. Also, sometimes it seems like what I want to say is trivial. I will try to remember to say hi now and then.

Please don't stop blogging!

I love Donna Leon mysteries, set in Venice. and all things Harry Potter!

I loved "Neither Wolf nor Dog" and "The Wolf at Twilight", both by Kent Nerburn, a Minnesota author. He has just finished the third in the trilogy "The Girl Who Sang to the Buffalo" which will be released this fall. Also, "Neither Wolf nor Dog" as a movie will begin filming this summer. The subject is the Native population of the Dakotas and their being forced to live on tiny reservations. They are funny, loving, fascinating, and emotional books that I will never forget. I also love Jon Hassler, another Minnesota author, who has written a group of about a dozen books that take place in the imaginary town of Staggerford in Northern Minnesota. You wouldn't be disappointed with either of these authors.

Brenda,
Don't even think about it! You are loved and would be terribly missed.
You know my favorites: George MacDonald - anything by him. A new favorite is Wilkie Collins. I adore Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings who was friends with my great-grandfather and lived nearby. ALL of her books are fabulous. My personal favorite is: Cross Creek which I read about once a year. Always delightful. I also like Rick Bragg beacause of the uniqueness of his southern writing - you have to grow up in the south to understand. I will send more as I think of them. Unfortunately, we are remodeling and I am in an apartment and all of my books are packed up. Bonnie

Dear Brenda,

Please keep writing; every day I enjoy your entries and your photos of your lovely home and your Victoria.

My favorite book is an old one called The Trapp Family written by Maria Von Trapp, about her family, their life in Austria and their journey before they came to Stowe,Vermont. I hope libraries still have her books on their shelves; she wrote another book but I don't remember the title.

First of all, please keep blogging! Leaving comments takes time and with several little ones at home I just don't often have time. Your blog has been a wonderful source of information for me for many years. I have to thank you for introducing me to Edith Schaeffer. I'm currently reading L'Abri for the first time and completely entranced. Anyway, I recently discovered Marjorie Holmes' story of Mary and Joseph, called "Two from Galilee". I like to read it during Advent. Wonderful love story and great telling of the familiar story of Christ's birth---done in such a way you can smell the animals and taste the food. Very descriptive. I enjoy it from the first page to the last.

Best book I have read in a long time is "The Vanishing Conscience" by Dr. John MacArthur. If you want to understand exactly why evil seems to be running rampant today, read this book.

I read your blog faithfully...would hate to see you go. It may seem no one is reading but we are!

Now, on to my favorite books and authors. For fiction, I dearly love Miss Read's Fairacre and Thrush Green series. ( Which I'm currently reading) Also, Robin Jones Gunn's Sisterchicks novels are hilarious and entertaining! As for nonfiction, I love Gladys Taber. Hi Brenda, just wanted to say that people are just not commenting the way they used to - so don't take it personally!

I used to have 30-40 comments on a post and now I consider it good to have 10!

I think there are just so many blogs that people just read what interests them and don't take the time to comment anymore.

So please, please, please, do not stop blogging!!

Please don't stop writing, Brenda! Comments are down for a variety of reasons: folks read on phones or tablets, which make it difficult to comment, folks read from a feed reader and don't bother clicking over to the site to comment, and the biggest reason, I think, is that folks read blogs now for the information and don't consider it a "conversation" as it used to be.

Oh PLEASE don't leave. You're blog is not only helpful but encouraging in a turbulent world. I do not blog, but read many everyday. Favorite books...love biographies, and memoirs and history for non-fiction. In fiction I can't go wrong with Rosamunde Pilcher, Debbie Macomber, or Jane Austen. Although I read about anything put in front of me. Especially fun are vintage books from the 50's & 60's, such as Mary Stewart, and really old Myrtle Reed books & Gene Stratton Porter, L. M. Montgomery, Laura Ingalls Wilder. I used to read the new Dan Brown, etc style end of the world books, but gave them up as not very encouraging and nightmare inducing. Of course everyday I try to get a few chapters of the Bible in and do also love Beth Moore for encouragement. BTW...love Victoria's antics.

OH, Brenda, I feel sorry I have not been commenting much lately, but with caner, two surgeries, radiation, and then a big infection that had me in the hospital for iv antibiotics and just getting home last night, sorry. My energy is just slowly returning and I'm not really well yet. Still taking pills and the rest you don't want to know about!

D.E. Stevenson is still a great favorite. The mystery series (more than one) by Charles Todd (a mother and son writing team who live far apart) is another favorite. The Maud Hart Lovelace books about Betsy, Tacy and Tib (not only for chidlren) is another favorite. Lately I've been reading both fiction and non-fiction by and about Celestine Sibley - I read many of her books in the 80s and just began to reread. When one is ill, I find the old favorites are what one turns to...Oh, another for fiction are books by O. Douglas, the pen name of Anna Buchan. I read many cookbooks, especially "chatty ones".

As everyone else has said - please do not give up blogging. I am not a blogger, but I so enjoy reading yours.

Favorite authors - Gladys Taber, Jan Karon, Darlene Diebler rose (wrote only one book - "Evidence Not seen" about her years as a missionary in New Guinea and then her years as a prisoner of war during World War Two. I cry every time I read it.)
Also enjoy reading Dorothy Benton Frank and Mary Kay Andrews.

First I will echo everyone who is begging you not to stop blogging! Although I'm sure it's discouraging to write to what may seem like a tiny or non-existent audience, you are obviously well-read and well-loved here in blogland! I know that I often don't comment because I don't feel like I have anything worthwhile to say, but I suppose that a simple "Thank you for your thoughts!" or "I enjoyed that!" is better than nothing...? (Not being a blogger, I'm just now thinking about it and coming to that conclusion.)

Anyway, as far as favorite books...

My favorite book (as of now :-)) is The Chosen by Chaim Potok. I read it two years ago and it moved me deeply in ways that I never anticipated when I just picked it up expecting to be entertained and maybe a bit inspired. I highly recommend it. There is a sequel, but I'm a bit afraid to read it, for fear that it won't be as good as the original and will break the spell for me, so-to-speak.

Other favorite books are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Treasure Island (just read it last summer for the first time and loved it!), Enchanted April, Gone with the Wind, and Peace Like a River.

Jessamyn West is a fiction author who I enjoy. I'm fond of the work of a fellow Kentuckian, Silas House.

In the world of Christian non-fiction, I always find myself both encouraged and convicted by the books of Gary Thomas. And David McCullough is hard to beat when it comes to the biography and history genres.

Anonymous said...

I thought of of few more favorite books and authors:
These are all fiction:
Jan Karon's Mitford series,
Daddy-Long-Legs, by Jean Webster
Louisa May Alcott's Little Women, Little Men, Jo's Boys, Eight Cousins, and An Old fashioned Girl (although written for a younger audience, they are priceless and timeless)
Cranford, by Elizabeth Gaskell
Jane Austin's books
Alexander McCall Smith's The No.1 Ladies Detective series
The Shell Seekers, by Rosamunde Pilcher
Debbie Macomber's Blossom Street series
James Herriot's All Creatures Great and Small series ( I guess they're actually nonfiction!)
Nonfiction:
All of Susan Branch's books
Crazy Love, by Francis Chan (this will challenge your faith!)
Heaven is for Real, byTodd Burpo (Simply Amazing!)
One Thousand Gifts,(the gift book) by Ann Voskamp

That's all for now, but I might think of more later!
I'm so glad everyone else feels the same about not wanting you to quit blogging! You are loved!
Blessings,
Laura C.(from WA stae)

I so enjoy your blog - please don't stop offering your wisdom to us all. I rarely comment on any blog, but I read lots of them!

My favourite fiction authors are Deborah Crombie, Debbie Macomber, Allen Bradley, Maeve Binchy, Rosamunde Pilcher, D.E. Stevenson, and so many more.

Favourite fiction is anything by the above authors and British murder mysteries.

Favourite non-fiction reading always seems to be in the realm of frugal living/gardening as well as, of course, Christian materials.

I don't have a particular favourite non-fiction author.

Blessings, Marie

You know I read here, as I do email once in awhile too. I also hope you will continue on, even if just once in awhile...life seems so busy now for everyone. For one thing, it takes more time to be a thrifty shopper than it used to (there were years that not much was around for coupons and food at least was much cheaper). Also, doing other types of business seems to just take too much time (because even just getting something via the mail these days can be frustrating...recent purchase was sent back to sender and who knows why??) Always some silly thing like that to take up the time.

The main way I read these days is blogs, and other research online...any books are not ones others would read for the most part, related to health issues, and some of our faith path research as well. I will be interested in your list here however...maybe something will be there I can find to read once more spare time is available.
Thanks for sharing all you do!!

I am back...my first post is...."below" I think.

This list is fiction:

The Girl in the Glass by Susan Meissner. (A pleasant surprise for me...takes place a good portion in Florence Italy)

Just read this winter:
Saving CeeCee Honeycutt by Beth Hoffman...serious, yet delightful.
Even made me laugh out loud. circa 1930's Georgia

Moon over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool circa 1920. A Good Read.

Hannah Coulter by Wendell Berry. Very good underlying messages.

I also love to read any good ol fashioned classics i.e. Louisa May Alcott.

I usually will add some Young Adult classics to add light-heartedness to the pot.

I generally look for the squeaky clean books. I am a very visual person. If I read it, or heard it said, I instantly have a picture in my mind. It took me years to figure this out, especially so, why I just can't shake things off as quick as others.

Am excited to see what everyone is reading and glean from it. Blessings from a 56 yr old mom/gramma in NY (not the city...I am a country girl in western NY)

My favorite fiction authors: Robin McKinley (her fairy tales are phenomenal), Guy Gavriel Kaye (alternative historical fiction/fantasy - beautifully written), Louisa May Alcott, Maud Hart Lovelace (her Betsy-Tacy series is like Laura Ingalls Wilder - fictionalized history), Jane Austen, Grace Livinston Hill (started collecting in 7th gr), Jacqueline Winspear's Maisie Dobbs series (late 20's, early 30's mysteries w/a lot of WWI PTSD issues. Fantastic books), Mary Stewart's romantic thrillers, and Elizabeth Moon's paladin fantasies.

I also enjoy reading a lot of what the BBC ends up making shows out of - Call the Midwife was fantastic.

Your blog is a blessing to many.
Blessings, Connie

A few more I almost forgot!
For fiction: Anne of Green Gables, by Lucy Maud Montgomery, Christy, by Catherine Marshall, and Hannah Hurnard's Hind's Feet on High Places.
Nonfiction: The Five Love Languages, by Gary Chapman.

Please don't stop blogging because of fewer comments. Sometimes it's hard to make out the letters for the word verification to send a comment. Your pantry posts are especially helpful and I love the pictures of Miss Victoria.

My favourite fiction authors are
Debbie Macomber
Laura Childs
Nora Roberts
Maggie Sefton
Kate Kingsbury (Pennyfoot Hotel mystery series. Sort of like Fawlty Towers with a mystery)

After I purchased a computer and discovered the world of blogs, your blog was one of the first blogs I found, or was lead to. I have never left a comment on any blog. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your eloquent writing. You are a good writer whose subjects resonate with the struggles of many of us. Your blog is always the first one I go to. I don't subscribe to any but wander according to my mood. Your words would be sorely missed, should you decide to leave. If that is what you feel you must do at this time, perhaps you could compile your work into a book so we could keep enjoying your wisdom and observances. Having a cup of tea in your honor, thank you for being here. I feel like you are a friend. I've seen some of the same titles on my bookshelves as you have on yours, and I love star trek! I found The Complete Brambly Hedge because of you. I have engaged a different perspective because of you. Thank you.

Please don't give up blogging. I discovered your blog about a year or less ago and it's become one of my favorite. I enjoy having so many years of achieves to glean from but love when something new and fresh is offered. I adore your pantry posts and your Sunday afternoon tea posts. They're my favorite. Plese don't stop!

And I'm on a Eugenia Price kick right now, especially about her years in St.Simons.

Wow! You have a lot of Anonymous readers! You must feel very encouraged!

At the recommendation of a friend, I've started reading some George MacDonald books and am enjoying them.

I (like several others) have read everything Maeve Binchey wrote - sorry she is now deceased. Adriani Trigiani is another fiction writer I enjoy.

Please do not give up blogging. You are an oasis of calm to me, and I have tried your pie recipes - very good!
That being said, favorite authors are Sarah Orne Jewett, Wendall Berry, and Helen Hooven Santmeyer.
