Feeling like autumn...

I can't believe that as I am writing, I am wearing a pullover sweater!  Who would have thought last week, with a daily high around 99... a sweater and long slacks and heavy socks would be my attire?  Really odd weather we are experiencing this year but I'll take the coolness.

As I write, I am listening to Paul Stookey on Pandora Radio (love the John Denver "channel") singing There is Love (aka: The Wedding Song).  It is beyond comprehension to my mortal mind that it was well over thirty years ago that hubby and I stood at the altar as our friend... guitar in hand... sang that song before we took our vows.

I look at the pictures now and think how very, very young I was (hubby says he married a child bride as he was seven years older).  But that was God's will and His journey... which has not been smooth but it is still going and we are still on that journey together... thanks to the One who walks the journey with us... and the outpouring of His grace along the path.

After a long day of errands and laundry and leftovers, I must "set the dishes soaking" and fold some of Christopher's clothes.  I do his laundry each week to help his finances... when one cannot offer cash, one offers to help in other ways like laundry... and homemade cookies.

When the dishes are all washed and draining in the red Rubbermaid dish drainer, I hope to read the D. E. Stevenson book which is due on Thursday.  It is finally cool enough to enjoy a hot cup of tea, too.  I read the last two Stevenson books in two evenings and I own those.  This time I do not want to pay a quarter a day for a late fee so I'm inspired to read quickly.

Oh, I did want to mention about the movie Amish Grace that I know the subject matter seems dark but the girl's murders take up just a short time in the beginning of the movie and even then it is from a distance.  The rest of it is about how one of the mothers tackles the difficulty of forgiveness and how the Amish community reaches out to the killer's family.

It is just a beautiful movie about trusting God and loving others.  We don't own many movies but this one went on my Wish List!  Knowing it is a true story makes it especially amazing.  It has taken me a lifetime to even begin to understand the power of forgiveness.

Now... if I'm going to read that book I must set the day's dishes into hot sudsy good smelling water.  :)

It's such a beautiful song. I read somewhere that it was written as a wedding gift for a friend. When it became very popular, it was arranged that all proceeds from it go to charity.

Dear Brenda,

I recently discovered your blog, and I have read through your archives with great pleasure. I am a French catholic mom of 6, trying to live frugally and peacefully in this hectic world !...

When my husband and I went out last night, I had him grab my raincoat! It has been raining for days, and is chilly now. So hard to believe it is only early September. I'll take it though!

I am going to write you an email telling you a few stories surrounding the Amish shootings. God has been at work.

Stay warm!

That song was sung at our wedding, too...in 1977. And it's still a favorite of mine.

The Amish are some of my favorite people...we don't have many living here in central Indiana but I often drive to other parts to go to their stores. I have a kitchen LOADED with yummies to bake with this fall. I watched the movie as well and cried and cried. Lovely people. I have just come in from hanging out my laundry in my bare feet and wow....I certainly got cold!!!!Have a lovely day!

We lived near Amish communities and they gave me my first deep lesson 45 years ago in recycling. They just naturally reused all they could and lived simply so they did not have to declutter. They were always so contented too. My family too was always into using up and making do etc and simple living . You are an inspiration yourself Brenda! Thanks for informing us on so many subjects! :) Sarah

Have you read the book Amish Grace (Kraybill, Nolt, Weaver-Zercher)? Although I adore Kimberly Williams-Paisley the movie angered me with the aside "Hollywood" story. I recommend the book.

Before the Nickle Mines tradegy an acquaintance of mine observed an Amish classroom while earning her teaching degree. She vividly remembers the boys hanging their hats by the door. She could not understand the lesson as it was in PA Dutch :)

Wish that Paul had stayed on track. He has written such beautiful Christian music. I'd like to see that movie. We have two to watch about missionaries being kidnapped and dealing with forgiveness. It occurs to me that I have more work or perhaps ongoing work in that regard. Enjoy the sweater weather!
