Heat and books and coffee

Kitchen window circa' 2009-ish
Thank you for the birthday wishes.  It was filled with such wonderful activities as dropping off our lawn mower to a friend's house, stopping by the clinic to see if my long term insulin had arrived since I only had two pens left (YES, thank you Lord!), and a visit to the grocery store for a bag of chocolate chips on my way home as I need to make a cake this morning for Sheila's birthday gift.  I also bought a celebratory doughnut.  That is allowed on birthdays.

All of this in the midst of another heatwave.  I think I melted off ten pounds but it all came back by eating one doughnut.  There were veggies to pick in the garden and it was desperate for a drink.   By the time I arrived back in the air conditioning, I was dizzy but the garden delighted in the long, soaking hosing down.

My one birthday gift to myself (well, really from the nice folks at Starbucks) was to exchange my birthday free drink card for a Venti Coconut Frappuccino yesterday evening.  I slipped my leather copy of Valley of Vision into my purse, reading Puritan prayers while sipping pure delight (that new flavor is yummy).  I guess you could say my gift to myself was keeping my blood sugar high all day long... but it is allowed on birthdays... as long as you don't tell my doctor.  I'll be good today.

I was going to begin reading through my collection of Anne Morrow Lindberg diaries last night but decided at the last minute I wasn't quite ready for the leap into a five book commitment.  When perusing through my shelves of old books (I love old books), I noticed Dorothy Sayers' book called Begin Here, which was written during WWII.  The preface is dated Christmas, 1940.

I had just heard Ravi Zacharias talk about her writing as "brilliant" and she has always fascinated me.  Imagine being a female friend of the Inklings.  That was my calling, you know... except I was born neither British, brilliant, nor that early in the 20th Century.

It is subtitled in the U. S. "A Statement of Faith" and in England as "A War-Time Essay"... which, when I found this out, answered my confusion as to which was what and that they are one (did you get that?).  So far I am enjoying this book very much.

I still have not had a chance to upload pictures and I owe a couple of you snail mail letters.  I do sincerely apologize for being so late.  Consider yourself hugged until my letter arrives.

Brenda,
I don't know if you have ever read The Zookeepers Wife but I am currently listening to it in the car as I travel to/from work. It is a story of a Polish husband and wife who have a zoo in Warsaw when the war breaks out. How they aid Jewish refugees... I too am enjoying my war time "diary".

I'm a relatively new reader here, having found your blog only a few weeks ago. Glad you had such an enjoyable birthday - your treat to yourself sounds lovely.

Oh, wouldn't it have been a remarkable experience to sit with The Inklings as a peer?!? (or even as a mouse peeking out of a hole int he wall!)

Well happy birthday friend, and the coffee sounds fabulous. I love the Inklings and have read several wonderful Dorothy Sayers' mysteries. Ah, to have met C.S. Lewis and all the Inklings would have been thrilling. They are all in heaven now, and possibly still chatting and writing.

Dorothy Sayers...I should begin reading this author as I have heard so much about her.

So glad that your birthday was enjoyed on your terms and that you'll be behaving yourself until your next birthday. Very good and mum is the word.

Happy Happy Birthday a day late, I think. I've been extremely busy this week. Our 2 Haitian grandchildren are now official! It may have happened on your birthday! July 27? Anyway, what an exciting day that was! Now tomorrow our son and daughter-in-law are renewing their vows to each other. Life is busy and exciting around here, like I know it is at your house.

Brenda, I have not read Dorothy Sayers but have heard wonderful things about her writing. What I didn't realize is that she was a member of the Inklings! I have always been intrigued by that group...to have shared ideas and thoughts with the likes of C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkein...I can only imagine what it must have been like. She is now moved to the top of my list. Thank you for sharing that bit of information, and for all your book reviews and thoughts. I appreciate them very much and find them so valuable!
Sending love and prayers to you,as always.
Warmly,
Tracey
P.S. So happy to hear you had a sweet birthday ;-) albeit productive at the same time!

If you are interested in Dorothy L. Sayers, The Nine Tailors is one of her best. (The Tailor is a big "tolling" bell which is traditionally rung 9 times when a man dies. Guess women rated less in those days :)

I'll look for Dorothy Sayers' book. For the past few months I've been on a World War II binge, both fiction and non-fiction, written both during the war years and afterwards. Fascinating time period and encouraging during troubled times. The British people were so brave.

Oooooooooooo...love your birthday treat! I enjoyed one yesterday for the first time...my daughter had one at the beginning of the summer and knew I would like it. (I even blogged about it today, and she told me that I sounded like a commercial. Oh well. Life's simple pleasures...)

Happy (belated) birthday, Brenda!

If I ever read my news feed, I would have noticed it was your birthday. But since I rarely have the time to look at fb or anything else I did not know. But, you will be happy to know that yours is the only blog I read tonight and so am here to tell you just how very happy I am to be able to call you my friend. Life is quite hectic for me right now and yet I am lingering in an "older" mood--and owning my aged years with dignity and gratefulness. Moving toward 60 and feeling it.
Love you and love hearing about everything and think you are an amazing writer and communicator.
Blessings of His peace in the midst.
