Peeking in from the yard

Before heading out yesterday to work in the cool of the morning, I made a pot of cinnamon tea... taking half of it with me in one of the "to go" containers I keep on hand. The other half was poured into the cute vintage Thermos (it only holds a half pint), which kept it nice and hot when I came back inside to rest and have a little lunch.

We have one more day of sunshine today before rain is forecast... again. Normally I enjoy rainy days when I can get the household work finished and curl up on the sofa to read and listen to the rain outside the large living room window. However, one can get too much of even a good thing.

I need to take advantage of the good weather to continue working on our yard. I assembled one porch "container garden" on Sunday afternoon and planted the Phlox out front. Yesterday I got the tomato plants planted where we used to have our compost pile.

There was enough room left between the plants and the fence to sew some flower seeds that I already had on hand. It's a butterfly mix that would be lovely. We'll see how it grows.

Today I'll be trying to clear out last year's dead grass and "stuff" from the perennials such as the hostas and grasses. It rained so much in April, we were never able to clear the old before the new plants shot up. The picture above explains it all.

I should have mentioned in yesterday's post that the two pictures on the middle shelf are the wedding pictures of both our parents. My parents were married at age 40 and 44 (and yes, I look like Mom, as does Stephanie, as does Faith... with a little of each of our dad's looks thrown in for good measure). My in-laws were WWII newlyweds.

Every time I see our wedding photo, I think of how young we were! It is so 1970s, take a look at hubby's sideburns and long-ish hair (that was considered rather short back then). My bridesmaids all wore yellow princess style dresses with a white daisy print... the Flower Child look.

I do have a rather recent picture of us on the sidebar (scroll down to all the pictures). It's from the only church directory where we were given the image to use again. It's a few years old but one of my favorite pictures. We pretty much look the same except Christopher is now almost 6' tall.

I'm hoping by Thursday or Friday to have a post put together combining all the book and film recommendations from the I Heart Hobbit Houses post (including e-mails). I am looking forward to reading many of the authors who are new to me. Just in time for my spring-summer of "whatsoever things are lovely", as I wrote about in the last Sunday Afternoon Tea post.

If you have any other suggestions, e-mail me before Thursday and I'll add them to the list.

I had to laugh. That's my Thermos! Well, it is just like the one I used to have. (Oh, I so wanted a "pretty" one when I was little.) Yours actually isn't as beat up as mine got to be.

I loved your wedding photo and what you did to the breakfront.

The 70's - awww - what a time that was. My husband and I have been married 33 1/2 years.

It started out really warm and sunny this morning. Now it is pouring rain. We're painting the inside of the parish hall so maybe it is good that is raining or no one would have shown up. :)

Brenda ~ thank you for pointing out that a directory picture was on the sidebar. I KNOW for sure I've scrolled down before but maybe not that far? Anyway, I missed it. It is good to see your family picture and put a face with the name (a more current one than the wedding pic, that is). :) Thanks!

I'm clapping my hands with excitement about the coming post about books and movies. I have already read a few of the suggestions.

We have been married 35 years. We had an informal wedding at my parent's home. My dress was a granny gown, orange with white pindots. Hubby's best man had a huge afro! Yes, we were very young.

Your little thermos is so cute! I'm going to assume Christopher is lots better. Praise the Lord. When he was trying to do all his school work and wasn't feeling well I felt so bad for him. You have a very determined young man. You must be so proud of him. I'm anxious for your coming post also.

My husband's hair looked just like your husbands when we got married in 1973! Wow, that's a long time ago!

I love your vintage thermos. :) Looks like you are making good progress on your garden/yard! we've been hard at work too. I can't wait to plant some veggies.

We're getting too much a good thing here as well! Rain and storms, storms and rain. We had one nice day yesterday and I had to spend it mowing the lawn!

Your little thermos is so cute! That's such a good idea too! I often put my coffee from the morning in a insulated carafe to have later on. Saves electricity brewing another cup and it doesn't go to waste!

Looking forward to the book list!

Ciao Brenda,
I could not stop laughing thinking of you thinking of me drinking all that stuff... probably because I actually tasted it before putting it into the microwave... and I tell you, it was not too bad. just think that I was used to eat/drink one yolk, 3 teapoons of sugar and one HUGE spoon of Nutella...
ciao from Italy
