'Tis a gift to be simple
'Tis a gift to be free
'Tis a gift to come down
Where we ought to be
And when we find ourselves
In that place just right
We will be in the valley
Of Love and delight.
When the true simplicity
Is gained
To bow and to bend
We shall not be ashamed
To turn and to turn it will
Be our delight
'Till by turning and turning we
Come 'round right.
I was thinking this evening of the gift that we give ourselves when we learn to enjoy the simple things of life. It was while thinking of things that make me happy and how many of them are quite small and unimportant in the eyes of the world.
For example, I absolutely love pancakes at the Cracker Barrel, the kind with their fried apples on top. I don't get them often (which is good for my blood sugars!) but when I do, I close my eyes and thank God for the gift of taste buds. :)
I have been thanking Him for a new friend, one that is quite like minded and a joy to have in my life. Thanks to my new friend, I have been enjoying the most gorgeous books while I'm curled up on my sofa, sipping Earl Grey tea.
I was overwhelmed with delight when I found crocuses blooming in my backyard yesterday. I spent a long time, nose to ground, gazing at their gorgeous color and realizing they were close to blooming while there was a lot of snow on the ground earlier in the week.
Some would call it lowering my expectations. I prefer to think of it as raising my ability to enjoy the common things of the world...delicious but simple food, books, tea, coffee, small children, cats, dogs, flowers, music...the good life.

For a few months in 1996-1997, following an illness, I lost my ability to taste sweetness. Oh, it was so hard to go through Christmas with all chocolates tasting like unsweetened baker's chocolate. All foods tasted different. Only a few were OK, like salt and vinegar potato chips. The doctor told me that there was a chance that my condition could be permanent. I really thanked the Lord when my tastebuds came back to life 3 months later! Enjoy those tastebuds.
Simple pleasures. As usual, you're spot on. :o)
May our Lord sweetly bless your day. Sherry
I agree with you! Simple pleasures are sweetened by a thankful heart...and makes for a richer life!
