Great advice from Nancy Campbell

When I was going through my files, I came across a wonderful article about preparedness from Nancy Campbell at Above Rubies. Click here, then click on Articles & Stories, then Articles by Nancy Campbell, then Certainty in Uncertain Times. I did a cut and paste to Word of this article many years ago. It's great stuff.

I've been so humbled by the comments and e-mails. Frankly, I was uncertain if the subject of Homemaking in Difficult Times (Emergency Preparedness) would cause people to not want to read my blog. Back in the 90s, the concept of preparedness caused some division in the church. I am so thankful that the feedback has been positive. I expect with all that is going on in the world, it is no longer considered a lack of faith to think ahead and be prepared for the unexpected.

I lived in Detroit on 9/11, right off of 13 Mile Rd. (downtown Detroit proper starts at 8 Mile Rd., you can do the math). Believe me, I remember what it was like to see no airplanes overhead, only military and police helicopters for a long time. My husband was on a plane that day and I didn't know if he was alive or dead until that evening as his plane would have been going from Chicago to New England. I remember the warnings that Detroit was a probable target, and we lived within a two mile radius of those targets. It can happen, it will happen again.

We had just moved back to the Midwest when a tornado ripped through our town, just a couple miles from where we were living. I drove into the parking lot of the church where I was on staff and there were parts of cars and houses hanging from the trees. It can happen.

Read the article by Nancy Campbell immerse yourself in His Word and, as the angels say...fear not.

I'm glad my comments were useful!

The last time we had to actually evacuate, the children were small - 3 and 5 - and it was a big adventure. Now, however, they are 10 and 12, and have watched news coverage of Hurricane Katrina, and the tsunami in Asia, and last year were much more fearful about hurricane warnings. We explained that it's important to be prepared as much as we can, but to not be afraid. We pray for our safety, and remind them that God is watching over us and will take care of us. As far as the safety of our home - well, I tell them it's just STUFF. We can always get more STUFF (that's why we have insurance!). The safety and health of our family, and our relationship with God, are the most important things. These are great teachable moments for our children - and probably good spiritual reminders for ourselves!

I've been less on line, with worry about and preparedness for, the Ice Storm. So I've missed a lot here, in your Blog. Will catch up, with all I missed.

Thank you very much for delving into this topic.

Its easy to fear instead of trust. I need to remember to trust more often.
