You wouldn't believe my son's first day of driving himself to his math class at the Junior College. First after finishing his class and spending time with his tutor, he realized he couldn't find his keys. After looking for them in the buildings, he went back to the car and saw them on the back seat of the car. They must have dropped out when he bent over to get his backpack. Fortunately, he was able to get a hold of his best friend who is (also fortunately) off of school today for fall break. He drove all the way to our place (he lives in a small town about seven miles away) and then drove the thirty-plus minutes to where my son is waiting. (That is a true friend.) I sent our extra car key with him and told my son to put it in his wallet in case this happens again.
Then he tried to start the car and it won't...start that is. He'd forgotten to turn off the lights. I asked him if he heard the "beep, beep, beep" that one hears when they open the door and the lights are on. He said he was in too much of a hurry to notice...sigh. Fortunately (again), there was an instructor nearby who could help him start the car.
That's not all, it gets better. As he was leaving the college, he realized he was too low on gas to make it home so he had to call me the third time (thank God for cell phones) to ask on what side of the car our gas tank is located. I then realized we had never practiced pulling into a gas station. He told me if I hear there was an explosion at the Marathon station close to the college...pray.
On his way home, he had to stop by another homeschool friend's house. He told that mother about his day. She gave him a big hug and then stopped to think about it. She said, "Christopher, all three of those things that happened to you today are common to new drivers but they usually don't all happen within two hours of each other". My feelings exactly.
I was going to write this evening about books I'm reading. I thought no fiction could get better than this.

All I can say is 'Bless his heart!'
I think we have all been there and done that. I know I have left my lights on more than once. Like his friend's mother said, they usually don't happen all on the same day. It will get better both for him and you! My DD is almost 30 and I remember when she began driving. I am happy to say she is a very good driver and drives anywhere.
Oh, I love the story! Such familiar events, but all in one day? Poor kid! Our eldest locked his keys in the car at the community college also and had to call dad, who left work to come help him out! It's time for one of those magnetic key holders that hide under the car! I actually purchased one for dear son, but he hasn't got it installed yet. He's away to the university; too far for us to run over just to unlock his car!
