Living the Pantry Lifestyle - Books & Laine's Letters

I get so many comments and e-mails thanking me for book recommendations, I've decided to share some of my favorite pantry cookbooks here.  I'll share more again if you like.

I have found a well stocked pantry must be married to a good stock of recipes.  Below are some of my favorite "from scratch" cookbooks.

Hearth & Home by Karey Swan

This delightful "cooking from scratch" style cookbook was popular among homeschoolers for years.  I was delighted to find out it is not only available on Amazon, but now it is available for the Kindle!

If I could recommend one cookbook to use with your pantry, this is it.  I gave my first copy to Stephanie when she got married and then missed it so much, I purchased it again soon thereafter.

More-with-Less by Doris Janzen Longacre

Another must-have cookbook for those wanting to cook "from scratch".

It was put out by the Mennonites long ago but it is still an important book for learning to cook from the pantry, as well as containing a lot of inexpensive recipes from other cultures from around the world.  I consider it an essential in my kitchen.

Make-A-Mix

Do you like convenience foods but want to get rid of the bad ingredients?  Then make your own mixes.

This well known book not only gives recipes for making all kinds of convenience mixes, but has recipes in which they are used!

The Elliot Homestead: From Scratch, Traditional, Whole Foods Dishes for easy everyday meals by Shaye Elliott

If you like the cookbook called Nourishing Traditions, you will find the suggestions and recipes in this book much easier to understand and there are lovely photos!  An excellent farm-to-table style book... written by the farmer!

The Victory Garden Cookbook by Marion Morash

This out-of-print cookbook is one of my all time favorites.  My copy is quite battered.  When I found a good used copy long ago at the library sale, I bought it to send to Stephanie.  It is the best cookbook I know for cooking with veggies.

From the Victory Garden TV show.  If you can find a copy at a good price, buy it!

An Everlasting Meal: Cooking With Economy and Grace by Tamar Adler

Absolutely my favorite book of essays about cooking that also shares how to cook.  If one knows how to cook and the basics of how food goes together, the sky is the limit in the kitchen!   This book made it to my Top 10 Influential Books list.

The Feast Nearby by Robin Mather

I just talked about this book a week or two ago but it is also an excellent book about cooking from scratch and with ingredients we have around us.  Like the above book, it is essays with recipes.

A Very Important Link!

My very favorite source of good "from scratch" recipes was Laine's Letters.  Sooo... run... don't walk... with your fingers, of course... and go over to The Bluebirds are Nesting blog.  Laine, from Laine's Letters, is there and with a very important announcement.

Hurry, click... here.

By the way, the reason her website was down I've heard is that it was hacked!

A list of these recommendations would probaby come in handy when I am shopping at the secondhand bookstore. I remember watching The Victory Garden cooking segments and enjoying them very much.

Hi Brenda! Thanks for the book recommendations. I have several of them. I was raised on the recipes from Make a mix. The authors are Mormon and so was I growing up. My mom still has the typed out recipes that they handed out at church, that later became this book. :-) It's one of my favorites.

Have you seen Simply in Season? It says it's in the spirit of More - with -less. It's really a good one.

The Feast Nearby and From Scratch look really good. I loaned my Everlasting Meal to my daughter - I need to get it back! I'll keep my eyes out for that Victory Garden one!

Upon your recomendation I checked out the Victory Garden Cookbook and ordered a used copy. It looks great - thank you for letting us know about it. I second Heather's recomendation of Simply in Season. It is also fantastic!

Thank you for talking about the Tamara Adler book. I bought it after reading about it. It is so far above the rest of culinary books.
Truly intelligent. Even ethical!
Her approach is so wholesome.I have hundreds of books about cooking and hers is now one of the few I would keep if I had to cull my library.
