Educating the WholeHearted Child give away

Being a die hard bibliophile... when I first started homeschooling, I read everything I could that was written on the subject.  There were a few books that I read over and over but only one which became a true reference book.  That was the original Educating the WholeHearted Child by Clay and Sally Clarkson.

I loved that book, it was full of information about homeschooling, parenting while homeschooling, books to read and use, other reference materials, different styles of homeschooling, etc.  So, when I heard Clay was spending a couple of years updating and rewriting the book, I wondered how he could improve upon it (other than updating it with more current information).

That is, until I read through the new book when they sent it to me recently.  Oh, my friends... it is fabulous!  It is a big book full of information which you will go back to read over and over (perhaps daily!).   I would go so far as to say it should be on the desk of every homeschooling family... not on the bookshelf because you will find yourself referencing it quite often.

Although it is a book about homeschooling, it would also be enjoyed by those thinking of homeschooling as well as anyone who enjoys reading about parenting from a Christian perspective.

Some of the areas covered are...

Home
The Christian Home, The Christian Homeschool, Home Nurture, Home Discipleship, Home Education

Learning
Living and Learning Together at Home, Creating a Home You Can Learn Within, Understanding Your Child, Beyond the WholeHearted Child

Methods
The Study of the Bible, The Study of the Basics, The Study of Ideas, The Study of Learning, The Study of Living

Living
Keeping the Vision Alive, Keeping the Homeschooling Together, Keeping the Home Together, Keeping the Spirit Strong, Keeping Faith in the Family

There are pages upon pages upon pages of book lists as well as forms which can be copied.

No wonder it took Clay years to revise this book.  I can't begin to tell you how useful it would be but think encyclopedia... mixed with "how to" information... mixed with years of homeschooling wisdom... and all written in such a way you can curl up with a cup of tea and read it for enjoyment.

If you only had one book about homeschooling, this is the book to own... and I thought it could not get any better than the 1990s version!

Sally is offering to give a copy to one of the readers here at Coffee Tea Books and Me!  All you have to do is leave a comment before noon on Thursday and I will draw a rabbit name out of the hat.

Should you not be the fortunate winner, this book is available through Amazon.com.

Of course, you can also purchase it through the Clarkson's Whole Heart website... here

Remember... noon on Thursday is the deadline to leave your comment.

  5. It sounds wonderful and I would be interested in picking it up from the library and reading it. I certainly could've benefited from it twenty years or more ago. Please don't toss my name into the cap, however, because it would be great if someone who is already homeschooling or thinking of homeschooling wins.

  6. Would love to have this for my granddaughter. I like to do hands on learning with her when she is spending a day or afternoon with Grandma and Grandpa. Learning never ends.

  8. I am commenting, not to win, but just to say--I LOVE THIS BOOK! I got it in August and it has been so amazing as we launched our first year of homeschooling and using Charlotte Mason's approach. This was EXACTLY what I needed to pull it all together in my mind. Not that I have it all together, but that is a whole other post...

I have the unrevised version of this book. It is great resource! I was also wondering what new material could be added to it, and have thought about purchasing the revised book. I appreciate that the book is not a formula approach to parenting.

Thank you for your recommendation for Educating the Wholehearted Child. I borrowed the first version briefly from a friend and loved it and have been wanting to buy the revised copy for myself. I was a public school teacher and am now teaching my kindergarten daughter at home, with a 3 year old and 3 month old. The differences between homeschooling my own child and teaching a classroom are baffling me! I could use some help! :)

Not sure how I missed this book all these years. It sounds like wonderufl resource. I started homeschooling in 1988 and graduated my 1st 2 in 1999 and 2002. We had a "bonus" baby in 2000 who is nearly a 10 yr cancer survivor who I homeschool. My oldest daughter homeschools her 2 oldest and I'd love to read this and pass it along to her. Blessings!

I have been salivating over wanting to get my hands on this book, even got my library to order it but the 3 weeks I could keep it was too short!! Sally is such an inspiration for my mothering and homeschooling and discipling my children. I am so thankful for her ministry. Thanks for the chance to win! And now I'm looking forward to checking out your sight...

  59. Oh, this book sounds wonderful and one I have been considering ordering. I am only praying about homeschooling. However, I am a firm believer that whether my children are schooled in the public school or home, I (and father) are their primary teacher and I desire to approach life, with my children, in a way I would if they were schooled full-time at home. Again, it is near to my heart and only God willing...but either way, and whether I win or not, I plan to have that book on my desk.

    Thank you for the review!

  67. Hi dear Brenda,

I am not leaving this comment for the book, but to tell you how kind your comment was on my recent posting. I have been thinking of NOT doing it, but knowing that there may be readers (like you) who drop in for a visit, but don't leave comments...well, it makes me reconsider.

    Sending love across the miles,

I used to have a copy of the older edition, which was such a help and encouragement. I gave the book with a friend several years ago, to encourage her family on their homeschooling journey. It would be a blessing to have a copy of the new book.
